Expansion of our Lineup of “AQUA Drill EX 3 Flute”
Carbide Drills for Highly Accurate Hole Drilling

1.Expanding the carbide drills market

Today, in hopes of increasing their drilling productivity, people on the shop floor are rapidly moving away from HSS drills toward carbide drills capable of high-efficiency drilling. In addition, there is a growing need for carbide drills in a range of applications for which HSS drills have conventionally been used a lot.

2.Marketing at Nachi-Fujikoshi
AQUA Drill EX 3 Flutes

To date Nachi-Fujikoshi has developed 12 types of carbide drills in the AQUA Drill EX Series in order to meet the various needs of people on the shop floor in the complete process cycle, from the initial process to the finishing process, of drilling of iron-based work materials, including carbon steel, structural steel, cast iron and stainless steel.

In particular the AQUA Drill EX 3 Flutes series overturns the stereotype that drills are double-fluted, by adopting three flutes and realize the same level of high-precision drilling as reaming. It allows for highly accurate one-off drilling of holes, which conventionally required two processes, the drilling of the drill hole using a drill and the finishing drilling using reaming, etc.

Due to this, the internal lubrication type AQUA Drill EX 3 Flutes oil holes launched in 2013 still have a good reputation today.

Recently in order to meet the need for use with machine tools that are not compatible with oil holes, we have added to our lineup the “AQUA Drill EX 3 Flutes Regular” which allow for drilling using external lubrication, and the “AQUA Drill EX 3 Flutes Hard” which allow for drilling high hardness steel. They will contribute to improving productivity and reducing costs through the use of reamer-less drilling in a wider range of shop floors.

3.Overview of the new products

(1) AQUA Drill EX 3 Flutes Regular

1.Features

  1. High-precision hole drilling using external lubrication
The combination of the 3 flutes yielding superior cutting balance and the cutting edge geometry yielding superior centripetal force directed toward the center of the drill bit improves chip breaking / discharge performance to realize stable drilling. The product allows for highly accurately drilling to a hole depth of 5D using external lubrication.
  2. Long-life AQUA EX Coating
The product uses defect-resistant fine-grain cemented carbide and AQUA EX coating exceling in heat- / abrasion resistance. Furthermore, a special lubricating film is applied to the surface membrane to reduce frictional resistance against the chips and greatly improve deposition resistance.

2.Dimension range and price

Dimension range : diameter: Ø3.0 to 16.0mm; a total of 95 sizes
Reference prices : Typical model: 3.0mm; 9,450 yen/piece (tax excluded)
Typical model: 16.0mm; 34,100 yen/piece (tax excluded)

(2) AQUA Drill EX 3 Flutes Hard

1.Features

  1. Highly-efficient drilling of high hardness steel
Due to their blade edge geometry combining sharpness and blade edge strength, and their high stiffness, these drills allow for highly-efficient drilling of high hardness steel of 50HRC or more.
  2. Longer product life due to the cutting edge geometry and the type of tooling material
These drills are made of highly heat resistant and abrasion resistant ultra-hard material types intended for high hardness steel, and use cutting edge geometry and the AQUA EX coating to realize longer product life.
  3. Stable high-feed drilling
Due to their use of 2-stage point angles combining sharpness and blade edge strength and the high stiffness of the main body of the drill due to the weak angle of twist, these drills allow for stable high-feed drilling.

2.Dimension range and price

Dimension range : diameter: Ø3.0 to 16.0mm; a total of 95 sizes
Reference prices : Typical model: 3.0mm; 8,960 yen/piece (tax excluded)
Typical model: 16.0mm; 32,300 yen/piece (tax excluded)
4.Launch plans
(1) Launch date : November 2014
(2) Sales target : 300 million yen per year (fiscal year 2015)
